Notes on Nashville

A few items of note from our trip:

1) What is this? We had no idea. A sculpture or really advanced technology?

2) Nashville has a full-scale replica of the Parthenon. It was built fully restored for Tennessee’s 1897 Centennial Exposition.

3) Nashville has a building that looks remarkably like Batman:

4) It’s hot. See melting cupcakes.

This is what happens when you let frosted, sprinkled cupcakes sit in your car in Nashville heat for 3 hours:

See how nicely the frosting melted and dripped off the cupcakes, leaving the sprinkles behind?

Also good to know: re-frosting melted-frosting cupcakes yields still-tasty cupcakes.

Budgies & more budgies

A few months ago, Zoo Atlanta had a “special” Tech day at the zoo – admission was $1 less than the normal student rate. Woo hoo. We took advantage of the “deal” and braved the sweltering heat to see some animals. We ended at the Budgie house:

This pairing was probably the smallest gathering – in the small budgie area there were hundreds upon hundreds of budgies. You could buy little sticks of food to feed them with, but we quickly discovered that the end of the afternoon was not the best time to try to entice them. We had expected them to fly down to the food, but after hundreds of little food sticks, they seem to have realized flying was not necessary. The only way they’d eat the food was if you stuck the stick right in front of where they were already perched.

Happy (almost) Halloween!

A few weeks ago, my mom reminded me that I had some Halloween decorations here with me in Atlanta. So after pulling half the boxes out of the crawlspace in my bedroom, I found the bag containing the Halloween “puppets” I made in clay class sometime in elementary school. Say hello…

Then my dear friend Annalise came to visit while she was in town for a work conference. Visiting another mutual friend, we got to carve a pumpkin! Carving pumpkins is probably my favorite Halloween activity, besides eating candy corn, of course.

Anna’s Surprise Birthday Party

A few weeks ago, Ryder and I threw a surprise birthday party for our friend Anna. She was completely surprised and jumped about a foot in the air when twenty people yelled “surprise” from her loft.

Michigan in the summer of ‘08

Unlike every other year of my life, this summer I spent just a few days in the state of Michigan as opposed to just a few days out of the state of Michigan.

First was Cheri & Darren’s wedding, where I got to see lots of my college friends (see all the pictures):

The rest of the weekend was spent seeing family & more college friends and reminiscing about the good ol’ days in Grand Rapids (see a few more pictures)…

With Friends, in Chattanooga

A few (or six) weeks ago, Brian, Anna, Dave, and Cherith made the trek down from Michigan to visit the lovely homes of Natalie and myself. Between the three of us sporting Canon DSLRs, we managed to take 0 pictures in Atlanta (I think), and probably 600 in Chattanooga. Why? Who knows. I guess Chatty is prettier than Atlanta. Anyway: here are the pictures from Chattanooga.
